Pjotr Ilych Tchaikovsky - 175th Anniversary

This year, 25 April saw the 175th birthday of Russia’s most popular operatic and symphonic composer of the 19th century. During his lifetime and long thereafter, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s works were often derided as clichéd kitsch, and his genius went unrecognized. Pjotr Ilych Tchaikovsky

But major conductors have since corrected such erroneous assessments, as numerous ORFEO recordings can confirm – such as those of the Pathétique under Sergiu Celibidache and of both the Pathétique and the Fifth symphonies under Ferenc Fricsay. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons has already released Symphonies Nos. 4-6, and these are now joined by the Manfred Symphony in a performance that is as gripping and opulent as it is transparent. The success of Tchaikovsky’s two principal operas, Eugene Onegin and Pique Dame, depends in particular on the merits of the conductor and on securing singers for the leading roles who possess the necessary musical mastery and expressive power – such as Mirella Freni and Wolfgang Brendel or Julia Varady and Vladimir Atlantov, who can be heard in live recordings from the State Operas of Vienna and Munich. Julia Varady has furthermore released a Tchaikovsky solo CD with songs and operatic excerpts. It offers a striking complement to the recordings of his chamber music and sacred vocal works that are also featured in the ORFEO catalogue.
