ORFEO CD C 678 072 IConducted by Gerd Albrecht, this is the first complete recording of the composer’s rarely heard second opera. Comic, lyrical and folkloristic elements all find expression here, as does the composer’s enthusiasm for Wagner. For the fourth time since 2005, the best recordings of the last twelve months have been picked from among more than five hundred new releases at the world’s biggest trade fair in music at Cannes. At the gala on 30 January 2008 the award for Král a uhlír was accepted by the soprano Lívia Ághová on behalf of the large team of soloists, the Prague Chamber Choir, the West German Radio Chorus and the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne. Lívia Ághová has already appeared to international acclaim in operas and other vocal works by Dvorák. At the awards ceremony she sang Rusalka’s Song to the Moon from the Czech composer’s most popular opera of the same name.
